The Lingokids Curriculum
How does the Lingokids Curriculum work?
The Lingokids Curriculum is based on building a rich English vocabulary. Lingokids offers a diverse program that includes standard topics, such as shapes and colors, as well as passion-based topics, such as dinosaurs and vehicles. Our curriculum has been developed by a team of experts with backgrounds in vocabulary development, reading instruction, teaching English as a second language, and curriculum development. Your child can explore the topic selected for weekly focus or can learn independently with the Lingokids app. Within each topic, your child will learn from a selection of games, songs, videos, and activities to fit his or her level and learning style.
What will my child learn?
Every week, Lingokids features a new topic to help your child acquire additional English vocabulary. For example, in the Numbers topic, your child can play an interactive game to practice counting, read or listen to an audiobook about numbers, trace the numerals 1 through 10 with our animated traceables, and sing along to songs about numbers. In our games, beginning learners receive scaffolded clues and instructions as well as simple prompts, such as “One apple.” Intermediate instructions use complete sentences, such as, “Lisa wants one apple.” At the highest level, children must listen closely for the key vocabulary word. For example: “Lisa would like one apple. Can you help her?”
Lingokids Learning Path
The Lingokids Learning Path was developed based on the following standards and practices:
- The Ludic Method (self-directed learning, immersion in content, game-based activities, relevant content, adaptive technology, research-based and evolving instruction)
- Best practices for beginning ESL instruction
- The Common Core State Standards Initiative (U.S.)
- Early Learning Standards (U.S.)
- Formative (ongoing) and summative (end of unit) assessment methodology
Organization of the Lingokids Learning Path
Lingokids instruction is organized around fourteen themes. Within each theme there are 52 topics in all. In addition to the core topics, students can also find bonus topics that focus on counting, writing, spelling, letter identification, phonics activities.
How to Follow the Lingokids Learning Path
The curriculum of Lingokids is structured on weekly topics. The topic that corresponds to your child each week is marked with a small label in the upper right corner that says "Learn Now".
We recommend that each activity in this topic be repeated as many times as possible throughout the week. The other four topics that appear in Kids Mode are the two previous topics (in case you want to review them) and the next two topics (in case you end up with the theme of the week and want to continue advancing).
In our method, the repetition of activities is the best way to solidify a child's learning. Repetition helps make language skills automatic. Once all the activities have been completed without errors, the test corresponding to that topic will be unlocked in the Test Center, in the Parents Section. You can learn more about our Test Center here.
The repetition of activities will also help your child receive stickers. Each time a student completes an activity, they receive a sticker! The Sticker Album is fun way to track your child’s progress and motivate them to keep learning! You can read this article to learn more about how the Sticker Album works.
If your child would like to explore activities outside of the Learning Path that's ok, too! In Kids Mode, simply use the icons above to select games, songs, and audiobooks. These will contain activities from a variety of topics. You can also press "... and many more" to see a complete list of activities in each icon. You can also go to the "Curriculum" section in Parents Mode to find a complete list of activities.
How can I help my child?
Learning English can be fun for the whole family! Games, activities, songs and audiobooks can be a fun way for the whole household to learn words and phrases. For parents that want to reinforce their child's learning outside the app, we suggest our printable materials. These printables contain coloring activities, craft suggestions, vocabulary games, and conversation starters for each topic that parents can use to practice English with their child at home.
